Wave at Pipeline

Banzai Pipeline is one of the most popular and best-known waves on the globe. Its name combines the name of the surf spot ("Pipeline") and its beach ("Banzai Beach"). In 1961 Bruce Brown, an American documentary film director visited the previously nameless surf spot at the north shore of O'ahu with the surfers Mike Diffenderfer and Phil Edwards to get some footage for a new surf movie. During that trip Edwards popped the wave's cherry - with a longboard!

You may be wondering: What's so special about Pipe?! Well, here's the answer. There are 3 reefs at Pipeline, each a bit farther out to sea. Depending on the swell size, direction and period, this spot can generate up to four different waves: a left-hander (Pipeline) and a right-hander (Backdoor Pipeline) on the first reef and, with a very large swell, waves on the second and third reefs. With alternating conditions there are more than 300 different ways that the wave at Pipe can break. It is notorious for large barrels breaking on a shallow reef, which is why it is considered to be one of the most dangerous waves in the world.

But that's enough theory for today. Here's the official VOLCOM Pipe Pro 2015 trailer:
