The second event of the 2015 World Surfing League Qualifying Series, the Scoot Burleigh Pro, is coming up in January!
It seems like just yesterday that Gabriel Medina claimed the world championship tour title for himself, holding the trophy high above his head at Pipeline. The 20-year-old was announced the first Brazilian winner of the world tour in round 5 after Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater lost their heats. For all of you who missed it, here's a quick recap on the young Brazilian's 2014 season leading to his world title:
While the world's top 22 surfers are on a well-deserved break, spending time witih their families, free-surfing around the globe or getting in shape for the upcoming season, the Qualifying Series for the remaining 12 spots in the recently re-named 2015 WSL (formerly ASP) world tour has begun. After the Shoe City Pro in Huntington Beach (California) in early January, the second event, the Scoot Burleigh Pro presented by Vissla, is about to start. From January 30 - February 1 a handful of surfers will compete at Burleigh Heads for 15,000$ and 1,000 points in the QS rankings. Only the 12 best surfers of the QS will be taking part in the upcoming competition for the world title.
Here's a little taste of what can be expected of the event at Burleigh Heads:
By the way, the first stop of the WSL Tour, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, will take place at Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia from February 29 to March 11!
